Sustainability:
Our North Star

Heartland’s products and processes are all designed for optimal resource efficiency and maximum environmental benefit.

Defining Sustainability

We look at every aspect of our business and work to optimize our impact by simultaneously minimizing the resources we use–energy, water, fuel, land–while maximizing the amount of waste material we divert from being dumped at landfills or directly into the environment.

By keeping our resource footprint as small as possible, we ensure that our circular end products–clean fuels, hydrogen, and carbon produced from waste that would otherwise go to the landfill–contribute to critical efforts to fight climate change, safeguard supply chains, and protect our planet’s air, land, and water.

Sustainability: good for business, the environment & people

Sustainability is good for everyone – customers, shareholders, manufacturers, and the general public.  By paying attention to the particular resources we use and where they come from, we can make informed choices that minimize our impact on the Earth, cut costs, improve reliability, and lock in future success.

That means sourcing renewable electricity instead of fossil-generated power and maximizing heat recovery throughout our systems to minimize energy loss.   It means optimizing the location of our facilities to minimize transportation of input and output material, thereby reducing the cost and emissions impact of long-haul trucks.

And it means embracing the circular economy – taking end-of-life materials and products that would otherwise be destined for the landfill and giving them new life as a clean replacement for the fuels and chemicals that are used in the production of new materials and products.  This “upcycling” approach offsets the need for new supplies of those inputs that would otherwise be pumped from the ground or created using dirty industrial processes, reducing both costs and environmental impacts.

Landfill diversion

Heartland keeps end-of-life materials out of the landfill and instead gives them a fresh purpose.  By converting waste into clean energy products and destroying PFAS compounds in the process, we reduce the need for dirty fossil fuels while simultaneously protecting the environment from dangerous air, water, and soil contamination.
